Are recharge plans with Netflix, Prime or JioHotstar worth it?
Many plans now come with apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Lite, JioHotstar or SonyLIV. They feel like a free gift, but the plan costs more because of them. The question is whether that extra is less than what you would pay for the app on its own.
How to check in one minute
- Find the plain plan with the same data and validity.
- Subtract its price from the OTT plan’s price. That is what you are paying for the app.
- Compare it with the app’s own price for the same period.

Paying ₹50 extra for three months of JioHotstar Mobile is good value if you watch it. The Netflix plan costs much more, so it only makes sense if you already pay for Netflix and want to move the bill to your recharge.
Things to know about bundled apps
- “Mobile” editions usually work only on a phone, not on a TV.
- You often need to activate the app from the operator’s app after recharging.
- If you switch operators, you lose the bundled subscription.
Our advice
Pick an OTT plan only for an app you already watch every week. Otherwise choose the plain plan and keep the difference.
