How much mobile data do you really need per day?

Most prepaid plans in India are sold by daily data: 1 GB, 1.5 GB, 2 GB, 2.5 GB or 3 GB a day. Pick too little and your speed drops in the evening. Pick too much and you pay every month for data that simply expires at midnight. Here is a quick way to find the right number for you.

What uses your data

These are rough figures for a phone on mobile data. Actual use depends on the app, video quality and your network.

Activity Approx. data per hour
Reading news, WhatsApp text, email 20–60 MB
Instagram, Facebook scrolling with reels 500 MB – 1 GB
YouTube in 480p about 500 MB
YouTube or OTT in 720p–1080p 1 – 2.5 GB
WhatsApp or Meet video call 300 MB – 1 GB
Online gaming (excluding downloads) 50 – 150 MB

Find your number in three steps

  1. Open your phone settings and look at mobile data used in the last 30 days. Android shows it under Network & internet, iPhone under Mobile Data.
  2. Divide that total by 30. That is your real daily use.
  3. Add about 20% for heavy days, then pick the next plan size up.

Example: if you used 38 GB last month, that is about 1.3 GB a day. Add 20% and you get roughly 1.5 GB, so a 1.5 GB/day plan fits. You do not need 2 GB.

Quick guide by user type

  • Light user (WhatsApp, some browsing, Wi-Fi at home): 1 GB/day is usually enough.
  • Regular user (an hour of reels or YouTube a day): 1.5 GB/day.
  • Heavy user (OTT on mobile data, hotspot for a laptop): 2 GB/day or more. If you live in a 5G area, 2 GB plans on Jio and Airtel also include unlimited 5G, which can matter more than the daily figure.

Save data without changing plans

  • Set YouTube and OTT apps to “data saver” on mobile data.
  • Turn off auto-play and auto-download of media in WhatsApp.
  • Let app updates and photo backups run only on Wi-Fi.
